Dr. V Visits a Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic in Chile!
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common birth defects, and can range from a partial to a full cleft of the lip and/or palate. Living in Toronto, we are fortunate to have access to the Hospital for Sick Children where an interdisciplinary team is able to treat babies born with this condition. Treatment starts shortly after birth, and continues until adolescent growth is complete. The team involved in treating these patients often includes an orthodontist, oral surgeon, plastic surgeon, speech and language pathologist, hearing specialists, among others. These children will undergo many surgeries and therapies over the course of their development in order to close the cleft and rehabilitate the associated conditions.
In many parts of the world, people do not have access to the type of care and interdisciplinary teams that we are fortunate to have here in Canada and specifically, Toronto. That is why Transforming Faces Worldwide educates local teams in Asia, Africa and the Americas in order to enable more children to be treated in these locations. Dr. Vendittelli was recently visiting Chile. Dr. V is part of the Cleft Lip and Palate team at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, so he partnered with the CLP team in Chile and spent a day at the Fundacion Gantz Hospital del Nino con Fisura. He was so impressed with the care that they deliver to patients locally and was blown away by their hospitality and enthusiasm. This Chilean team partners with Transforming Faces Worldwide, a charity that Forest Hill Orthodontics strongly supports.
We are so impressed with the work that this team does every day and are proud to support Transforming Faces Worldwide. We feel lucky to be able to put smiles on our patients’ faces every day, but we recognize that there is a great need for orthodontic and cleft lip and palate care around the world. Thank you to Transforming Faces and the team at Fundacion Gantz for providing this incredible service to CLP patients around the world!
