Why Choose an Orthodontist?

Why Choose an Orthodontist?

Happy New Year, friends! As we look forward to 2019, we are excited by the new year and our resolutions. Get more organized? Lose that holiday weight and hit the gym? Eat healthy? Improve your smile and confidence? These are many things that are on people’s minds as the new year gets underway.

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

When considering who should take care of your smile, it can be very confusing trying to figure out who to choose and what the differences are. While dentists are experts at the health of your teeth and gums, orthodontists do an additional 3 years of school AFTER dental school just to learn how to straighten teeth! Orthodontists specialize in all kinds of tooth straightening for both adults and children. We use all different appliances such as braces, Invisalign, lingual (inside) braces, retainers, expanders and appliances that work with jaw growth. Orthodontists spend all day every day straightening teeth, and they are experts in this field creating beautiful smiles and enhancing patient confidence. It truly is the most fun part of dentistry (we think)! We are also board certified by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada as being specialized in orthodontics.

Why does it matter if I choose a dentist or an orthodontist for my treatment?

Perhaps your dentist does braces or Invisalign. But they also take out wisdom teeth, place implants and do root canals. Orthodontists not only have additional expert schooling and continuing education to become specialized in moving teeth, but this is what we do every day, all day long. If you were having heart surgery done, would you want it done by your family doctor or by a cardiac surgeon? While we are not performing open heart surgery (thank goodness!), we do have the advanced training in Invisalign, (inside) lingual braces and metal or clear braces to give our patients the best smile and healthy bite for their lifetime. Orthodontics is an investment: you have one chance to get it right! You want to make sure that the treatment you undergo gives you the best and healthiest result possible. It is best to trust your treatment to an expert, especially when it comes to the health of your teeth.

What about a direct to consumer aligner company? Isn’t it more convenient and less expensive for me to DIY at home?

Yes- treating yourself at home may seem less expensive and more convenient. But what may seem like a cost savings at the outset may end up costing you more money down the line to repair damage to your teeth and gums that may occur from “do it yourself” treatment. These treatments do not consider the health of your teeth, bite, or gums and do not require you to see a dentist during your treatment. Many patients have ended up worse off than when they started, due to unsupervised tooth movement. There is a reason that orthodontists go to school for many years and see their patients regularly for appointments- to make sure that the teeth are moving properly and safely! Just like you would not cut your own hair, re-wire the electronics of your house, or fly your own airplane without the proper training, you should also not “treat yourself” with remote dentistry. Instead you should “treat yo’self” to orthodontic treatment with a specialist! Give yourself the best chance to have the best outcome for your teeth and smile.

Make 2019 the year you get your smile from an expert.

Both Drs. Hendler and Vendittelli are certified orthodontists who enjoy treating  children and adults. Both doctors teach orthodontics at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and lecture locally and abroad, teaching other dentists and orthodontists about orthodontics. They look forward to meeting you at Forest Hill Orthodontics and creating a beautiful smile for you.
